Think 70: Shoe Dog- Top 10 highlights from the book

No. 70, Sept 25th, 2023.

Hello and welcome to Think, your newsletter on leadership, career and growth from the smartest entrepreneurs, leaders, and investors.

Shoe Dog By Phil Knight

My top 10 highlights from the book.

  1. The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.

  2. Happiness can be dangerous it dulls the senses.

  3. People reflexively assume that competition is always a good thing, that it always brings out the best in people, but that’s only true of people who can forget the competition.

  4. Don’t tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results.

  5. Imitation is flattery, but knockoff is theft.

  6. There is no finish line- beating the competition is relatively easy, and beating yourself is a never-ending commitment.

  7. It’s never just business. It never will be. If it ever does become just business, that will mean that business is very bad.

  8. I’d tell men and women in their mid-twenties not to settle for a job or a profession or even a career. Seek a calling. Even if you don’t know what that means, seek it.

  9. Entrepreneurs have always been outgunned and outnumbered.

  10. And those who urge entrepreneurs to never give up? Charlatans. Sometimes you have to give up, when to try something else, is genius. Giving up doesn’t mean stopping. Don’t ever stop.
